Colour me shocked!
Every so often the Youtube algorithm makes suggestions as to what I should watch. Last Friday I followed their recommendation and watched the “Piano lesson everyone should watch” featuring Seymour Bernstein giving his thoughts on Chopin’s Prelude in E minor Op28, No4, a piece I’ve been playing since my teens, for at least 40 years!
It doesn’t happen often that one sees something which makes you exclaim “That changes EVERYTHING” but Professor Bernstein had me saying just that! Not only was I treated to the most exquisitely beautiful performance of the E minor Prelude but what he says about crescendo and diminuendo ‘hairpins’ may well change not just how I play the prelude but possibly EVERY piece I’ve ever learned composed in the 19th Century.
